What is an ITIN?

An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)

  1. Who Needs It:

    • Nonresident aliens who must file a U.S. tax return.

    • U.S. resident aliens (based on days present in the U.S.) who file a tax return.

    • Dependents or spouses of U.S. citizens/resident aliens.

    • Dependents or spouses of nonresident aliens with visa status.

  2. Purpose:

    • Used for federal tax reporting.

    • Helps individuals comply with U.S. tax laws even if they do not have SSNs.

  3. Limitations:

    • Does not authorize work in the U.S.

    • Does not provide eligibility for Social Security benefits.

    • Cannot be used as identification outside of tax-related purposes.

  4. How to Obtain It:

    • Complete Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.

    • Submit it along with required documentation (e.g., proof of identity and foreign status) and the federal tax return.

An ITIN is particularly helpful for people in the U.S. who may have tax obligations but are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number.
